Marc Marquez admits his wrong tyre choice ironically paved the way for a dominant victory at Brno.
Marc Marquez felt driven to ‘take a risk’ when the Repsol Honda rider woke on Sunday morning ahead of the Czech MotoGP race at Brno.
Ultimately, the reigning world champion’s decision to fit a soft wet rear proved the wrong choice as he rapidly dropped from second place to 10th in the space of a lap.
Marquez, though, wasted no time in pulling into the pits to change to his second bike and stole a march on the rest of his rivals, rapidly opening a lead of 20 seconds by the time the rest of the field followed his lead.
The Spanish rider has now extended his advantage at the top of the championship to 14 points over Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales, who finished on the podium in third as Honda celebrated a one-two with Dani Pedrosa claiming the runner-up spot.
Marquez said his victory – his third at Brno – was all the more special as he dedicated the win to the memory of Spanish Grand Prix great Angel Nieto.
“Honestly, it was a really difficult Sunday, first of all a special Sunday because all the riders were riding for one legend that we lost and there was that extra motivation,” he said.
“Today I felt like I wanted to make a race, I wanted to push and I take a risk for try to win the race, but this time it was the incorrect. Everybody was quiet and suddenly I said, ‘put soft [rear]’ because my plan was to try to push a lot the first four or five laps and then go in, when it would start to be dry.
“But honestly it was the incorrect decision because the rear tyre was spinning a lot and I was losing many positions. I went into the box a little earlier but it was the only chance that I had and went I went out with the slick tyres. It was still very wet and I nearly crashed three or four times in the first lap especially,” he added.
“Then I cooled down a little bit and I started to warm the tyres well and I’m very happy because I don’t know what lap, but I saw ‘P1 +18 or +20 seconds’. Then the sunshine came and everything was better and more clear on the track. I started to ride well, to ride smooth and just arrive in the end.”
Marquez completed a two-day test at Brno in July, which he said proved invaluable at a circuit that has not been one of his happiest hunting grounds.
“This circuit normally every year I am struggling a lot but this weekend I feel really good. In the summer break the test we did was really important and on a circuit where always I am a little bit worried because I struggle a lot, I go out from this track with 25 points and it gives me a very good confidence.
“Today, I don’t know why, but when I got up I say, ‘I want to take the risk’. I don’t know why but in the end 25 points is important for the championship.
“First of all we will enjoy this victory because every victory is important but then we have an important test tomorrow to try a few set-ups, a few things to try to understand better for the Red Bull Ring. Last year it was a circuit that we struggle a little bit but we were there – not very far.
“I think if we improve a little bit we can be there, we can fight for the podium, but we will see. At the moment we will enjoy and next week on Friday, after FP1 and FP2, I will say to you where we are.”
